Stockinette stitch is one of the basic building blocks of what we think of when we think of knitted garments. It produces a fabric with a flat smooth side (aka the “knit side”) and a bumpy side (aka the “purl side”).

 

Knit back and forth (flat)

Row 1 (Right side, and all right side rows): Knit all stitches Row 2 (and all wrong side rows): Purl all stitches

Knit in the round

All rounds: Knit all stitches
